Oh, Hi is a quirky, dark comedy driven by the organic performance of its leading lady. A look at relationships and how far people go to save them. I had the benefit of going into this one with no idea what would happen. It made the twists and crazy turns that much more hilarious – and awkward.
Synopsis: Iris and Isaac’s first romantic weekend getaway as a couple goes awry. Convinced that he’s just confused; Iris goes to increasingly ridiculous and irrational lengths to prove to him that they are meant to be together. | 94min | Rated R for sexual content/some nudity, and language
We all have a moment that we wish we could redo. A text to unsend, a joke to untell, or a conversation to just skip all together. For Iris (Molly Gordon) that moment is a 12 hour period in which she goes off the rails slightly to save a relationship.
Molly Gordon is so fun to watch and her performance is what elevates this from just another quirky comedy into something far more special. Regardless of the emotion Iris is feeling, Molly has the ability to live in it so naturally. A neurotic breakdown is hard to sell but when hers happens it is as much endearing as it is psychotic.
The film primarily lives in one setting. A remote, weekend cabin. Other than Iris and her boyfriend Isaac (Logan Lerman) the supporting cast is minimal. The writers make great use of the limited elements to create a solid story that doesn’t need a lot of fluff and distractions. The chemistry between the two actors is believable and dynamic. Another key component to making this film work.
The final act of the film does bring in a second set of characters in Iris’s best friend Max (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Max’s boyfriend Kenny (John Reynolds). Both Max and Kenny add to the comedy as they try and help Iris and Issac work out the issue at hand. Max has an idea that viewers will never see coming. She just wants to help her friend in any way possible, and her suggestion is out of the ordinary.
At the heart of the film is the complexity of dating and relationships. No one ever gets it right and we all have been there. This story has fun with that while showing what maybe not to do.
It is rated R and certainly an adult film. The dark comedy may not be everyones cup of tea, but if you want a fun date night film it is worth the stream for sure.
