Hamnet is getting a lot of buzz this award season especially for the performance of lead actress Jessie Buckley. Directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao this tragic, fictional story based on the life of William Shakespeare.
This is a beautifully shot film that is heartbreakingly emotional. It is a tad confusing as the how mush is fact and how much fiction. What is not confusing is the depth of Buckley’s performance as Agnes. Agnes is a variation on Anne, Shakespeares wife. If not for award season I am not sure this would be on my list of recommendations. I prefer a more Shakespeare in Love approach. There was little in this one in the way of light moments to balance out the loss and sorrow.
But what do I know. This film has been slaying at film festivals and praised by critics. So see it for yourself and decide.

Synopsis: A powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, “Hamlet”. | 2h 5m | Rated PG-13 for thematic content, some strong sexuality, and partial nudity.
