Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a no nonsense addition to the franchise. Some new characters make it interesting and the action is full force. Bottom line is that if you are a fan you will like it, if not; there is nothing here to change your mind.

I have to be honest I am not in the fan category. Not growing up the cartoon caused movies not to have a big draw for me. I tried the last six films to engage with the franchise, but nothing to me was endearing. Optimus Prime is always gives a good speech about uniting and overcoming. But it begins to feel like the same spiel after two films.

This time around Optimus has to practice what he preaches. His decision to save earth or the Autobots is not an easy one. A planet eating god has shown up with some hard to beat Transformers of its own. The Autobots have to join with a league of Maximals – a whole new ring of Transformers. To be honest the Maximals are the main draw in this film; they are super cool and my favorite elements.

If you have watched any previous films you know there is always the human equation. Some reluctant soul who stumbles into the battle and reluctantly joins the fight. This time it is a couple of New Yorkers. One trying to prove his worth and the other trying to showcase her skills in the world of archeology. Be prepared to push believability out the door. Not just for the bots but for the earthlings as well.

Are there any redeeming moments?

Other than the action and the slim reference to unity and one for all, not a lot. I would never spoil anything but I will say that the ending did have me raise an eyebrow. Could something interesting be coming? We will see.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts needs to be seen on the big screen. Regardless of the regurgitated plot there is a plenty of action and noise to make up for the short comings. The fight scenes are full on with plenty of bot on bot conflict. The humor – if you call it that – is on par with the last films. Bumblebee’s quoting of lyrics and movie lines has become a bit stale. That was always the go to for humor. This time around we get Mirage. He is voiced by Pete Davidson which makes his character sadly more annoying.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and language.
