Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick is now available on 4K Ultra HD + Digital Code. With over 80-minutes of bonus features. Real-life stunts, pilot training, and more.

Top Gun: Maverick is arguably the best blockbuster film of the year, and possibly of the last several summers. Critics and movie goers both agree – shocker – that it is nearly flawless. The odd part is that it isn’t easy to pinpoint why it is so good. It just simply is.

The last time a Top Gun Movie came out I was navigating my first year out of High School, wearing florescent green tank tops, and trying to figure out how to be the next Nikki Sixx. Thirty Six years later and I might have a slightly better fashion style, but still chasing that rock star dream. Tom Cruise on the other hand doesn’t miss a beat as he steps back in the leather jacket of Capt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. Watching him in this role it is easy to see that he is having as much fun making the film as we do watching it.

Synopsis: After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

Everything clicks in this film from the storyline, to the characters, to the directing. It is that coming together of all elements that make this film so fantastic. Smart writing is the main thing that comes to mind. It is more what they chose not to do more than what they did do. They made a fun, adrenaline fueled, action movie that focused on characters and nostalgia. They didn’t try and wow us with unnecessary drama, or regurgitated fluff. There was zero ego from from the writing team. Instead they let it all wow us organically. You walk away from this film feeling good. And that is what a movie should do.

Cruise is joined by some young thespians who have already established themselves as solid performers. Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Monica Barbaro are vital to the ensemble success. Like the writing team there is no ego – other than what the character requires – but more a sense of making something grand. Maybe it was the expert directing of Joseph Kosinski, or the upbeat vibe that Cruise brings to set. Whatever it was it worked on a grand scale.

The action sequences have to be seen on the big screen. Many times it is ok to stream a film on your Dolby Atmos home theater. Not this one. You need your breath taken, your mind shook, and your body impacted by the g-forces this one brings when seen on the biggest screen you can find.

Will Top Gun: Maverick be the first action film to win over the Oscars? Will critics carry the current love into award season? This one will, and I hope others will too.
