The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a film that could have gone many different ways. These characters have been a part of gaming since the mid 80s. This accounts for three even four generations of gamers. Trying to make a film that appeals to everyone is not possible. What this one does at least is to offer up all the iconic fixtures from the games while offering animation for even the youngest of Mario fans.
In this story we find Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) trying to make a go at it as plumbers in Brooklyn. When they find a mysterious underground passageway they are swept away to Mushroom Kingdom. Luigi is captured by a lovestruck Bowser (Jack Black), who has his eyes and heart on Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). In order to save the kingdom and Luigi, Mario, Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Peach team up with Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) to take down Bowser.
Many adult viewers will be underwhelmed by the Saturday morning cartoon feel in spite of the cool homages to the game. The writing and scenes are certainly geared for the very young members of the family. That does not mean that it is not enjoyable, but you older peeps will have to rely on all the hilarious and at times subtle references to the game.
PG
The story line is very simple with very little in the way of character depth or edge of your seat excitement. It is cute. End of story. The film is rated PG for action and mild violence. TO be honest there is more action and mild violence in a circuit of Mario Kart than you will find here. Or at least on par with. But that is ok. I would rather have a film that a 6-year old can relate to and enjoy than have them modernize the characters to appease adults.
Speaking of Mario Kart, one os the best scenes in the film takes advantage of those cool rides. If you have every played Mario Kart then, like me, you will immediately get sweaty palms when you see what track they are on. Ugh, I hate that course. I drive off the edge a hundred times.
There is no reason to critique the voice actors in this one. These characters need no help from celebs. You could have unknowns voice Mario or Bowser and it would still be great. These are not new characters who need a recognizable voice to ground them. We love them all on their own.
