The Perfect Couple

The Perfect Couple is a perfect binge worthy six-episode series hitting NETFLIX on 9/5. Based on the best selling novel, this who-dun-it will have you guessing – and most the time incorrectly – from beginning to end.

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Billy Howle, Jack Reynor, Ishaan Khatter,
Meghann Fahy, Sam Nivola, Michael Beach, Donna Lynne Champlin, Mia Isaac, with Liev Schreiber

Synopsis: Amelia Sacks (Hewson) is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman), has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.

I often wonder if the super rich watch shows like this the same way we average people do. It will not take long to despise most of the characters in this one. But I am also looking at it through the same eyes as the main character, Amelia. The wealthy may see her as the villain, but that would make the series far less fun.

Each episode offers up a suspect or two then ends with a twist that may or may not back up your theory. They are all guilty of something. But murder? That is what the two nantucket detectives (Michael Beach and Donna Lynne Champlin) have to figure out. I adore Champlin in this role and in a perfect world we would get to see her character Nikki Henry in future shows.

Even if you have read the novel by Elin Hilderbrand this show is entertaining to watch play out. Watching the characters play out in despicable fashion adds to the intrigue. At times it does feel a tad soap operish in dialogue and story line, but those moments are forgivable in the grand scheme. The performances help elevate it from the daytime TV fair.

We have seen Kidman in this type of roll so we are not surpised by what we get. Same could be said for Fanning. It was a lot of fun to watch Schreiber who plays Greer’s husband Tag. He is the poster boy for too much money with too little to do.

Eve Hewson always ends up being my favorite actress in any ensemble. This one was no different. She is the square peg trying to fit into this obnoxious round hole family.

Nantucket is a beautiful place to set a mystery so curl up in your comfiest of chairs, grab a beverage of choice, and enjoy this spicy series.
