The People We Hate at the Wedding

The People We Hate at the Wedding is available now on Prime Video. This raunchy comedy is a lot of fun to watch, and relies on its cast to deliver some very memorable, and hilarious lines. I expected cliche but what I got were heart felt moments that were far less predictable than imagined.

I am a huge fan of Kristen Bell and try to see everything she is in. The big surprise came from Allison Janney and Ben Platt. We know Bell can deliver and we have seen comedy from Janney. Platt is the big scene stealer here as he proves that he is as well suited for comedy as he is for drama and singing.

The story line is fairly common. Family tensions ramp up among siblings in the week leading up to their half-sister’s wedding in England. Paul (Platt) and Alice (Bell) are living in the US estranged from their older half sister Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) who lives in London. Their mother Donna (Janney) desires them all the bury the hatchet and what better place than a wedding.

They all have baggage and personal issues which come out in full force. It is a well written script that director Claire Scanlon brings to the screen wonderfully. She allows her characters to be as free and loose as possible. She no stranger to comedy having directed episodes of some of our favorite tv shows including The Office.

Along with the outrageous adult comedy there is a lot in this one about family forgiveness, personal acceptance, and being happy with who you are. We can move on from the hurt put on us by others or we can rise above it. Donna wants nothing more than for her family to find happiness.

If you simply want a comedy full of snide remarks, naughty antics, and full on burns then you will be happy as well. You may be a tad uncomfortable watching this one with strangers or in mixed company. Or maybe you wont. Regardless there is a lot to laugh at and might even spur on some conversations afterward. Families are messy and this one is a hot mess for sure. Watching them work it all out is to our benefit.

The People We Hate at the Wedding is rated R for sexual content and language. You can stream it now on Prime Video.
