The Banshees of Inisherin

The Banshees of Inisherin is the new film from director-writer Martin McDonagh, and reunites his IN BRUGES cast of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. It is a quirky story with solid acting. Farrell is a contender for a best acting award plus there is a strong supporting cast as well.

Nominated for nine Critics Choice Awards!

Now on Digital, and Blu-ray™ and DVD December 20

SYNOPSIS: Although Pádraic and Colm have been lifelong friends, they find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, bringing alarming consequences for both of them. #TheBansheesofInisherin

Review: The film is set in a very small, fictional town in Ireland. The only thing to do really is visit the local pub for a pint. Something that best friends Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson) have been doing most of their lives. I can understand how the monotony of this life could weigh on the hearts of those longing for more. McDonagh does a wonderful job of giving us that sense of mundane life through dialogue and landscape.

Colm needs his space and that longing for more has reached a peak. But how do you escape a repetitious life when everything is in such close quarters. It would be like divorcing your spouse then living in the same two bedroom apartment. You just keep bumping in to each other, no matter how hard you try not to.

Pádraic on the other hand loves the life they have and refuses to accept his friends dismissal. Colm can’t really articulate why he no longer wants to be friends which adds to Pádraic’s confusion. The film is about them trying to understand each other, and the lengths you go to prove your point.

I appreciated the concept of the film and as mentioned the performances are award worthy. The issue comes in the rational and decisions of Colm. It is a wasteland of contradiction and hypocrisy. Maybe that is the point, but in the film it leaves you frustrated and confused.

You will see this film mentioned a lot during the upcoming award season and I do recommend you watch it. Just go in with tad lower expectations than you did with Billboards and Bruges.
