The Bad Guys are breaking into theaters on April 22nd! This one was tail wagging fun for the whole family from start to finish! I am not sure if it is ok to call an animated film, sexy? But this one just had a cool swagger to it that made it a blast to watch. – more review below

Synopsis: Nobody has ever failed so hard at trying to be good as The Bad Guys. In the new action comedy from DreamWorks Animation, based on the New York Times best-selling book series, a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws are about to attempt their most challenging con yet—becoming model citizens. Never have there been five friends as infamous as The Bad Guys—dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf (Academy Award® winner Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake (Marc Maron, GLOW), chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson, Hot Tub Time Machine franchise), short-fused “muscle” Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) and sharp-tongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina, Crazy Rich Asians), aka “Webs.”

The Bad Guys – RATED PG – In Theaters April 22
review continued: I am unfamiliar with the book series so I had little back story going in. Obviously none was needed. We are quickly introduced to the main characters and how they fit into society. Unlike Zootopia which was all Anthropomorphism, this one had a mix of both. You had a fox who was mayor and the citizens were all human. This allows for creative interaction between species. I mean, everyone has heard of the big bad wolf and to steer clear.
Watching the film I kept thinking of non animated heist films and capers. This could have fit into the Ocean’s 11 franchise with no problem. The animal characters were very stylish and it was easy to focus on the story and not think about, oh that is a snake and a shark.
Even the fact that the shark and the piranha live on land didn’t bother me at all. I mean if a wolf can wear a suit – very nicely I might add – and drive a car; why can’t we just suspend all belief? It makes it a fun ride.
LA is a perfect backdrop for the film and the creative team did a fantastic job bringing it to animated life. The entire production was spot on. The colors were crisp clean without ever feeling cartoony.
Watching it with my 9-year old I am not sure who laughed the most. He appreciated the characters and humor as much as I did. If I am honest I may have laughed at the “butt” jokes more. The voice actors are recognizable but never dominate the scene. I have always been a fan of Sam Rockwell and he is the perfect choice for Mr. Wolf. He has a playful tone to his voice which is both suave and flirtatious. He solidifies Mr. Wolfs leadership and his ability to influence others.
The film is only an hour and 40 minutes and the time goes by nicely. There was a moment near the end when I was worried they were going to try and do too much. Could we have lost 10-minutes? Sure, but it doesn’t hurt the overall experience. It really was a lot of fun.
