Wonderful performances from Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha help ground the characters into the time period as well as engage the viewer. Writer/Director Eugene Ashe strips away all of the fluff to create a timeless film that will play well for all those who appreciate the power of love and what it means to follow your dreams.

Synopsis: When a young woman meets an aspiring saxophonist in her father’s record shop in 1950s Harlem, their love ignites a sweeping romance that transcends changing times, geography, and professional success.

My wife discovered this one while flipping though Prime. It was the perfect movie night for the two of us and our college daughter. I keep going back to the word “timeless” as this one had that feel from start to finish. Most films these days feel they need to up the ante in romance films with excessive sex and nudity. In a world of TV-MA (which I am not denouncing) it felt refreshing to watch this one which trusted its script and actors. There was a purity in this one even in the moments when the characters weren’t. Maybe it was the decade or maybe just the way Ashe told his story. Regardless I highly recommend this one if you have Prime and are looking for a good date night in with some tasty snacks and your favorite movie buddy.
