SOMEBODY I USED TO KNOW is a layered, adult, comedy from husband and wife duo James Franco and Alison Brie. It is available on Prime Video February 10th 2023.
Synopsis. Workaholic TV producer Ally faces a major professional setback which sends her running to the comforts of her hometown. She spends a whirlwind evening reminiscing with her first love Sean and starts to question everything about the person she’s become.
Alison Brie stars as Ally, and though there is a similarity in names there is no personal biography happening. Brie and husband James Franco wrote the script which James directs. The main thing that I gravitated to was the conversations the characters have about leaving home to pursue your dreams. Ally left her home town to become a successful TV producer. In doing so she had to leave behind her first love, Sean. Years have passed and she starts to question was leaving worth it.
Sean too had good reason to stay. Part of him can’t understand why Ally would leave. That relationship dynamic is a common one. In a relationship, who gives up the dream? It seems like one person always has to. When Ally meets a young woman in a similar situation she gets the opportunity to not only rethink her own decisions but also offer personal guidance.
There is a lot of humor in this film
along with the introspective drama. Like most films of this nature there are the quirky friends, a doting mother, and several awkward moments. The humor is balanced with Ally’s angst and turmoil about her current life.
It is fair to say – and Brie agrees – that we are allowed to be frustrated with Ally’s decisions on this journey. She makes choices in the moment that may cause you to dislike her. It is hard to hold a grudge against Brie for too long though and everything “works out” in the end.
