Scream VI heads to NY City. They say everything is bigger in Texas, but New York is the setting for bigger kills, chills and thrills. I am getting older or these films are getting gorier.
Watching the first five Scream films was smart leading into this latest blood bath. VI brings in all the past names and scenarios, most of which I would have long forgotten. At least watch the 2022 Scream film if you can. Granted this one follows the template closely, and you will not have any problem figuring out the plot.
Samantha, Tara, and the rest of the latest Woodsboro survivors have headed to NY. Sadly there is nowhere to go to escape the “Stab” movie franchise. Ghostface is more popular than ever and surprise surprise a copycat killer emerges.
If anything gives this edition an edge it is the setting of NY. More people, more places to hide, more iconic backdrops. Unfortunately the writing is still cheating off of past scripts. Understandably there are elements that the Scream fans want. They want the rules, they want the Scooby-Doo unmasking at the end, they want a blend of pop culture. Those things are all there but nothing feel even a smidge original; even for a film that is never original.
The casting is a bit odd too. The new faces bring nothing memorable, and even some past faces seem stale or are missing all together. Obviously we miss Dewey, and we do get a small sampling of Gale. Tara is the strongest draw to the film even if Sam is supposed to be the front runner. It is nice to see Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) back.
One thing that is fun about the Scream franchise is how they really try and put the focus on everyone to be the killer. By now we have learned that the most obvious is the less likely… or is it? Also, there are enough films now to fill a museum. And they do in this one. The killer has collected tons of props and collectables from bot the “Stab” films, and the actual killings. They have built a shrine of sorts that is as creepy as it is nostalgic.
SCREAM VI is rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, and brief drug use. As mentioned I felt like this one was more brutal and the stabbing moments seems way more intense. This one certainly brings the heebies.
