SCOOB! is available now on Blu-ray and digital! Like most older parents I was a huge fan of the Scooby-Doo cartoons. There is something very endearing about that brown pup and his best pal Shaggy. I was concerned going into this one that they would try and modernize it too much and it would lose that nostalgic, innocent feel. It is fine to be relevant but not at the cost of losing heart. Those with the same fears can rest easy. I think you will find a decent balance of both – current and classic – in this one.

The film starts with a brief intro of how Shaggy and Scooby meet each other as youngsters, and in time the rest of the mystery machine gang. The story then quickly jumps to the meddling kids being the age we most remember. A mystery soon ensues centered around Scooby and a villain familiar to the cartoon world. There are additional characters in the story that almost distract from the gang we came to see. The Blue Falcon – a hero of Shaggy’s – joins in to help save the day. TBH I would much rather of had more Fred, Wilma, and Daphne. Not sure the reason to add the new faces. Falcon does add some humor but nothing that couldn’t be made up elsewhere.

I watched this with my 8-year old who is very familiar with the Scooby world. He told me he gave it 4 out of 5 Scooby snacks. So that isn’t a bad rating for the core audience. As an adult there was a lot that I enjoyed in this one. Not only seeing characters I grew up with but there are also some hilarious cameos from the past. The main villain is Dick Dastardly who you may remember had a four legged side kick named Muttley. There are a couple of other additions that I will allow to be a surprise as you watch. It was a pleasant surprise when they pop up on screen.

Safe to say that this Scooby mystery could have used more ghouls and fewer technical gadgets. Add in the fact that prime screen time was robbed by new faces allows me to only give this a B- grade. Yes it was fun and there were moments to laugh at. Certainly worth viewing with the family. I just longed for a bit more classic.

EXTRA FEATURES: Bloopers, deleted scenes with an alternate opening, how to draw Scooby, and a few more fun extras.
