SAW X

SAW X is an intriguing story that takes place between SAW I and II. It is a nice piece of the Jigsaw puzzle – yes I just said that – even if not the best of the franchise. Not by far. Seeing it in the theater heightened the gross factor, but you should still get the general idea if you wait for streaming.

If it has been a tick since you watched SAW I you might not remember that one of John Kramer’s (Tobin Bell) captives is a doctor that John says screwed up his x-rays. In this one it is soon after that and we find John heading to Mexico for a experimental treatment. One that he hopes will give him a cure.

If you watch SAW only for the gruesome gadgets this one will frustrate you for a while. There is a lot of set up and origin before get to the first Jigsaw game. Once they start they live up to the franchise and more. I had to look away several times in this one. John makes this vendetta even more personal than the others, and though keeping with his “life lessons” mentality, the ante is certainly upped.

John Kramer is the face of SAW but to be honest Amanda (Shawnee Smith) is such a key player in the success of the films. We get a strong dose of here in this one plus a look into her early mindset of working side by side with Jigsaw. I appreciate the writers and actors being able to treat the characters in way that truly feels like an origin film. I would think that Smith would have to forget all of the Amanda antics thus far and treat it as something new and fresh.

If surgery is a trigger for you, then this is not the Saw for you. Even as I type this I am trying to block some of the imagery from creeping back into my head. And that is after watching with one eye closed!

It is hard to rate this film without splitting it up. The first hour is very slow and to be honest, boring. The rest of the movie is classic SAW with an ending that might be the best one yet. I am just not sure if it makes up for all the other meandering minutes.
