PERSUASION premieres globally on Netflix on July 15, 2022. This adaptation of the Jane Austen novel is perfect for streaming. It may not have held up as well in a large theater with strangers, but was an excellent choice for curling up in bed with the wife and daughter for a rainy night movie at home.
Synopsis: Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she let get away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. Adapted from the Jane Austen novel.
Arguably no one writes period romance like Austen.
Yes they can be a bit formulaic, but they have the same draw as Hallmark Christmas movies. You know what you are going to get, and you can’t wait to get it. Persuasion may be one of the lesser known novels getting lost in the shadow of Pride and Prejudice or Emma. The story is engaging enough with a formidable cast to bring the dialogue home.
Johnson as Anne was a surprising choice on paper. After getting to know the character it is soon apparent that she is a good option indeed. As the middle child of three over the top sisters Anne is the one who is more than likely to say or do something that doesn’t quite fit in with polite society. This makes her a challenge for potential suiters and a headache for her narcissistic father. She isn’t an easy win, yet is more endearing for it.
Persuasion captures the period nicely.
The wardrobe and surroundings seem plucked from the tree of pomp. Austen readers will appreciate the way Anne breaks the 4th wall and engages directly with the viewer. Thus giving them insight into what she is thinking at all times.
The film is rated PG and a fun option for your family movie night.
