Obi-Wan two punch

OBI-WAN

OBI-WAN KENOBI premiered on Disney Plus with a 2-episode release. Starting with the perfect recap of the events of Star Wars III before jumping 10 years into the future where this adventure takes place. Obviously no series is perfect, but this one has everything you need to keep coming back.

Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) embraces his role as the Jedi turned hermit nicely. It is important that this series fit in with Star Wars IV both in how the characters behave and the decisions they make. Seeing this Kenobi become the old Kenobi we know from the 70’s is very plausible. He has already put the ways of the force and the Jedi life behind him. Even his interaction with Owen builds upon the past films.

We do not get much of Luke in the first two episodes, but surprisingly we get a strong dose of Leia. Obviously she lived a much more exciting – though still sheltered – life than her brother. Oh, if that is a spoiler alert that Luke and Leia are brother and sister then you started with the wrong show. It is funny after watching the first two episodes of OWK how much we take for granted as far as plot lines.

We are all familiar with the opening of SW IV with a young Leia placing the plans of the DeathStar in R2D2. But who ever stopped and thought about why she chose to send them to an old hermit on a far off planet? Something about her new she could trust Ben. But why? I like how this series already is bridging those gaps.

The set design, imagery, and worlds are so amazing. This one is a feast for the eyes and ears. I can not wait to see where the series takes us, and how it continues to meld the past and future shows. Do we want to see Darth Vader? Oh for sure. Will the initial conversation between Obi and Ani be one of old friends or dire enemies? Obviously from the early films it would be that of foe. But I can’t help but think that there will be some remorse and a bit of longing for the old days as well. As Luke said, “there is good in you yet.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi isn’t dead.. not yet.. and this series has so much more to offer. Unlike other streaming channels we will now get one episode a week instead of the choice of watching it all in one day. I like that. I don’t want it to be over too soon. It has been a while since we got some really good, old school, Star Wars stuff. And this one seems to be just the ticket.
