Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is supposedly the final film in the Tom Cruise led franchise. This one leaves no stunt undone as Ethan Hunt (Cruise) goes all out to save the world from ChatGPT. There is never any doubt when it comes to the action expected in the MI films. Land, air, and sea all take a part in this final mission that will leave audiences exhilarated and exhausted.
Like most of his films of late Tom Cruise has been taking a personal approach to getting fans in the theater. His love for movies and the people who watch them is an endearing trait that obviously goes into the making of each film. it is as if he wants you to get every pennies worth, and in this one you get that and more. There are several nods and surprises going back through all of the many MI movies. It feels like a tribute to the franchise and a reminder of how far we have come with Ethan and for that matter Tom as well.
It would be smart to watch some of the later MI’s before checking this one out. Not a deal breaker but will help you with some smaller plot points. But the bottom line is that the world as we know it is about to end and the one man who can save us is the same man that everyone has been trying to disavow, kill, frame, fire, and ignore for generations. Come to find out the things they despised about him are the things needed most now. And we need you to trust him. One last time.
Ethan has last a lot over the years and could easily throw his hands up. But instead he dives in to protect those he loves and those he will never know. Of course he does so in ways that seem – and for the most part are – humanly impossible. But that has always been the fun of this franchise and kept us hanging on over the years.
Lots of familiar faces in this one new and old. That too adds to the wrapping up of the final adventure. Thankfully, though they resort to some of the most expected lines and gadgets, it is not over played. This is not a film that plays it safe and just rehashes the past. They pay respect but do not rely on the easy out. There are many fresh elements and stunts here that take the film to new and unexplored heights. We would expect nothing less from Tom Cruise and his mission to drop our jaws.
No surprise that this movie is long. Almost three hours. There are certainly some moments that could have been trimmed to reduce the length. But at the same time that would go against the idea of giving fans every drop possible. If Tom had his way it would probably be six hours with an intermission. Once it is all said and done you do not walk out wishing it was shorter. It is only during some parts you might zone out a few minutes or check your watch. But then the next action scene starts and you don’t care how long it takes.
Humor is also present here. As you watch Ethan in some moments it is as if Cruise can’t hide his joy of filmmaking. He seems giddy and happy which comes out in some of the character interaction. And that is infectious for the cast and those watching in the theater. It really is a fun time.
No spoilers here. This is touted as the end but Cruise certainly leaves an out if he ever wanted to come back. In any sort of capacity. At the same time if this is the final mission, it is a dynamic end to one of the most exciting franchises ever.
