Meg 2: The Trench

Meg 2

Meg 2: The Trench makes waves in theaters before summer movies start the shift into seasonal dramas. It is Jaws meets Jurassic as Meg 2 borrows from both franchises to give audiences more teeth and tons more action. Be sure and revisit THE MEG – streaming on Max – if you have forgotten some of the characters. I rewatched it the same day as The Trench, and it felt like a seamless transition from one to the other.

Several years have passed and Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is working for an oceanic research team. His job is keeping the waters safe from would be polluters while the rest of the crew led by founder Jiuming “Uncle” Zhang (Jing Wu) create advances in the ocean world.

The Trench is an unexplored area of the section discovered in the first film. Jonas and team have been studying it for years with few issues. This time they go deeper than ever, and yes, things go very wrong at that point. Spoilers aside they meet the worlds worst apex predator ever; The Man.

You may feel a tad frustrated the first 45-minutes or so of the film as we get very little Megalodon action. it isn’t bad, i just wanted wall to wall teeth. I was worried that this one was going to end up more about company feuds and environmental battles. Not to worry though. The last two-thirds of the film gives viewers over the top action and enough bite to please the pickiest Meg lover.

My favorite part of sequels is seeing returning characters and familiar faces. Meg 2 brings back Mac (Cliff Curtis), DJ (Page Kennedy), and Meiying (Sophia Cai). A big disappointment for me was the absence of Suyin. I liked her character in the first film and was excited to see her again. And I get it, her character would have been fluff in this adventure. Still bummed though.

Meg 2 is a fun experience at the theater. Like the first film it doesn’t feel the need for gratuitous content. It knows its audience and truly does deliver what an over the top summer creature feature should.

Rated PG-13 for action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material
