I adore Angelina Jolie in the role of Maleficent. In the 2014 film she captivated us with the grace and power she brought to the character. Now in the follow up it is just as before; commanding and dynamic. It has been interesting following Elle Fannings career since she brought Aurora to life in the first Maleficent film. She has proven herself to be one of Hollywoods new elite. Films like The Neon Demon made sure she was far more than just a Disney mistress. But it also proved why Aurora has such a strong presence. Fanning brings depth to characters like no other.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a stunning film to watch. Let’s face it, very few studios create “other worlds” like Disney. The attention to detail engulfs the viewer and pulls you in. Costumes and makeup are just one element that elevate this film into a grand experience.
I must admit I wanted more from the story. Maybe that was my fault. As a big fan of the franchise I might have gone in too excited. Not horrible by any means it just lacked some of the dialogue and character bonding I wanted. I did notice when watching it a second time on blu-ray that it felt more organic.
Certainly one for Disney fans. If you missed it in theaters or like me walked away a tad underwhelmed, now is your chance to witness – and enjoy – it all over again.
