The latest film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan is a creative story about humanity and the lengths we are willing to go to save it. It is more than a home invasion thriller, or a jump scare cliche. As usual Shyamalan gives us a supernatural story wrapped around a thought provoking message.

Andrew (Ben Aldridge), Eric (Jonathan Groff), and their young daughter Wen (Kristen Cui) are trying to have a peaceful getaway in a remote cabin. When four strangers show up with impossible demands, the family have to try and keep their wits and figure out how to escape the madness around them. Unlike the movie Strangers, these four unwanted guests claim to be normal, everyday folks trying to save the world. But their request proves otherwise.
The group is led by Leonard (Dave Bautista). Bautista delivers a fantastic performance that is out of the norm from his Guardians and Glass Onion roles. In fact, Leonard is much akin to his very small role in Blade Runner 2049 as Sapper Morton. He is soft spoken, kind, and even gentle as he tries to explain the dilemma that brings them there. There is a task that none of them want to be a part of, but one that must be endured.
There is lots in this film that viewers will love unpacking. As always I refuse to spoil any of that here. It was intriguing, and at times nail biting to try and discover the truths around the events unfolding. M. Night does a wonderful job of telling us everything, but at the same time keeping it all suspect. Maybe we don’t want to believe the truth. It is easy to judge the characters and stand by what “we would do” if in that predicament. But at the same time there are no easy answers.
Other than a few flashbacks the entire story takes place in the cabin, Shyamalan keeps this from being monotonous by using camera movement and edits. The cast also keep us riveted to the screen with emotional delivery. Along with familiar faces of Bautista, Rupert Grint, and Groff we also get stellar performances from Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ben Aldridge, Abby Quinn, and new comer Kristen Cui.
I recently did a podcast episode where I discussed the films of M. Night Shyamalan. In it we talked about his come back with movies like Split, The Visit, and Old. Knock at the Cabin is an even stronger showing and could be one of my faves. Will it hold up for a second and third viewing once all the facts are revealed? Maybe. Even The Sixth Sense is fun to watch again after you know that – spoiler alert – Bruce Willis is dead.
