As WILL TRENT winds up its latest season on ABC – and Hulu – it is worth arguing that this is the best detective show to hit old people TV in some time.
It is easier to create a show on Cable with no limitations on language and adult content. You can make it as violent and gritty as you want. But when a show comes around that is able to take on the limitations of Network Television and still hit a home run with characters, cases, and complexity; that says a lot.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling books, the series follows Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. Trent has a unique background. Abandoned as a baby, raised up in the foster care system, and struggling with dyslexia, Will has a keen intellect and ability to read people and crime scenes.
Rodriguez is award worthy as Trent and the foundation that makes the series so likeable. He is joined by Iantha Richardson, Erika Christensen, Jake McLaughlin, and Sonja Sohn. The writing is intricate too and weaves in new and old cases through out the seasons. It was renewed in April 2024 for a third season. I for one am very excited about this, especially with how S2 ended.
You can watch all episodes of S1 and S2 now on HULU.
