I Want You Back

I want you back

I WANT YOU BACK is now streaming on Amazon Prime, and is the perfect ticket to your Valentine’s weekend! This adult rom-com is full of heart and humor while breaking free of your traditional, stereotypical plot line. Don’t miss Prime Video’s new rom-com #IWantYouBackMovie

Synopsis: Peter (Charlie Day) and Emma (Jenny Slate) are total strangers, but when they meet, one thing instantly bonds them: they were both unexpectedly dumped by their respective partners, Anne (Gina Rodriguez) and Noah (Scott Eastwood), on the same weekend. As the saying goes, “misery loves company,” but their commiseration turns into a mission when they see on social media that their exes have happily moved on to new romances, Anne with Logan (Manny Jacinto) and Noah with Ginny (Clark Backo).

Terrified that, in their 30s, they have lost their shot at happily ever after and horrified at the prospect of having to start over, Peter and Emma hatch a desperate plot to win the loves of their lives back. Each will do whatever it takes to put an end to their exes’ new relationships and send them running back to their arms.

I am such a fan of Jenny Slate so when I heard she was in this new comedy I was all in. Slate has the perfect balance of dry wit and endearing lovability. Her organic delivery style creates comfortable characters who you can’t help but root for. In this one has just gone through a devastating breakup. Her character Emma is willing to try anything to get back with her ex. This allows Slate to show a desperate and vulnerable side that she sells perfectly.

Likewise Charlie Day brings his straightforward nice guy routine to the table nicely. It was fun watching him and Slate work together. We meet them as they first meet. So we get to see them grow in their friendship as the work through the pain of break up. Of course we want them to end up together, but as with life. Not everything goes as planned. Or does it?

Scott Eastwood, Gina Rodriguez, Clark Backo, and Manny Jacinto are a wonderful supporting cast to back up Day and Slate. We haven’t seen Eastwood in a while and I can’t remember seeing him let loose like he does here. Though a tad stiff at times he is still able to pull off the funny moments and embrace that love hungry romantic.

There is a lot of humor in this film that makes it as much an adult comedy as a rom-com. Take out all the romance and this is still a hilarious look at dating, breaking up, and finding that person that really gets you. Awkward moments abound in this one. But they feel true to life and the characters react the way most of us would. It takes some twists and turns to break the monotony of your typical love lost and found motif.

I WANT YOU BACK is rated R – for language, sexual material, some drug use and partial nudity – and is for adults. At the same time they never go too far as they dance along the line of crude. There was a time – even now – when these sort of films were more concerned with sophomoric, shock value rather than well thought out conversation. I never regretted any of the laughs this one pulled from me. That is a sign of good writing.

I give it 4 out of 5 tub jumps. This was a lot of fun, and the perfect chance to see some decent characters brought to life.
