An unforgettable cinematic stage performance, the filmed version of the original Broadway production of “Hamilton” combines the best elements of live theater, film and streaming to bring the cultural phenomenon to homes around the world for a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience. “Hamilton” is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, “Hamilton” has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. Filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, the film transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way.
Review: Having HAMILTON premier in its entire stage production on Disney + is a monumental moment. Those lucky enough to have seen it live in NY with the original cast understand what a ground breaking and awe inspiring event it was. But thousands never had that chance. For some of us we caught it live on tour and even that was unforgettable. So now for the masses to be able to watch it again and again with that original cast in the comfort of their own home is fantastic.
The “film version” is directed by Thomas Kail who also directed the original stage production. I say film lightly because this 100% feels like a live production and not a static movie. Every step and dance move is caught perfectly live and comes across the screen in seamless fashion. You get the sense that you traveled back in time to 2016 and are sitting front row at the Richard Rodgers Theater. The costumes and set designs pop on the screen and bring the story to life.
The songs created by Lin-Manuel Miranda for Hamilton have few equals. The lyrics are full of rich history brought to us in fluid beats and rhythms. The clarity of the vocals are even better here if that is possible. It is near impossible to sit still while watching this performance. If you are not up dancing and fist pumping by the end of My Shot you might want to have your pulse checked.
Many know the story but to see it played out here with Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.), George Washington (Chris Jackson), Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs), and of course the amazing King George (Jonathan Groff) is another level. I know it is hard sometimes to commit to another streaming service but if you are on the fence about getting Disney + this should push you right over the edge. It really is one of the less expensive services out there and the content – now especially – is so very worth it.
My hope is that other productions will follow in the path of this one. Can you imagine sitting down to watch Wicked, Rent, Fiddler on the Roof, or Spring Awakening anytime you wanted? Nothing will ever replace live theater but I have to say that this production is as close a runner up as you will get.
