Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is based on a true story. We get so used to hearing that. It seems that everything is plucked from reality. What makes Gran Turismo stand out is how incredible the true story is, and how current the saga. Oppenheimer is based on actual events, but history has a way of waning.

I was intrigued by this film, but not giddy. My 11-year old son on the other hand was all over this film and his excitement was infectious. He has played the game a lot – and admits that he might not be as good as the main character – and it was fun for him to see a gamer in the spotlight.

Gran Turismo

SYNOPSIS: Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs – a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec – who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

The action scenes in this film are phenomenal. Seeing it in Imax or DolbyVision will put you in the drivers seat like few racing films have. There is a nice balance of on and off track drama so that you are able to root for the underdogs more. Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) is a likable kid. He is relatable and will remind you of a school chum, kid down the street, or even one of your own family members. Djimon Hounsou stars as Jann’s father Steve. As always Djimon steals every scene with tangible emotion.

Another strong performance comes from David Harbour. David plays former racer and Jann’s coach on this seemingly impossible journey. Harbour – as in most roles – has this gruff outer layer that hides a passionate, vulnerable interior.

What will make this film award worthy though is the sound editing. Yes, I know everyone watches the Oscars to see who wins Sound Editing. But seriously, the mixing editing, and pairing of it with the visuals was podium worthy.

Gran Turismo is rated PG-13. Other than some on track intensity, and a few colorful outbursts, this might be one of the tamest PG-13 films you will see. We had no issue taking our 11 year old. Granted the movie is over 2-hours long, so there was some squirming near the end. Mainly from my wife. But we were all so engaged in the story and excited to see the outcome that it was worth any numbness our extremities felt.
