Ghosts on CBS

GHOSTS is so much fun to watch. I started the series hoping for a silly comedy that took very little brain power to enjoy. That may sound like a negative notion but it actually takes a lot of “out of the box” creativity to pull off; and the writers nailed it perfectly. It reminds me of the shows I grew up watching, and I can’t wait for another season.

Season 1 has eighteen episodes – at the time of this article we are on E16 – with even more planned for Season 2. I know it seems like America is always stealing the BBC shows and making them our own. The UK version of the show is 3 or 4 seasons deep, but, like THE OFFICE I see no reason to watch that one. I prefer to pretend that this one is completely original.

The premise of the American version has Samantha (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) throwing both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a rundown country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast – only to find it’s inhabited by the many opinionated spirits of deceased residents who now call it home.

Each of the eight ghosts died on the property starting in early days of the colonies up through the 1990’s. This allows for amusing dialogue as each one attempts to understand the modern world, and interject how things were done when they were alive. Only Samantha is able to hear and see them due to a head injury. She becomes their link to the present and help s them to understand the new world.

Most of the episodes focus on one ghost deals with an issue from the past. Samantha and the other ghosts hep them to navigate through it. Like all good sitcoms it is easily dealt with in a fun and fast 21 minutes. And, thank the heavens, with no studio laugh track!

A couple of my favorite episodes this season were VIKING FUNERAL: When Thorfinn’s (Devan Chandler Long) bones are discovered on the property, he asks Sam to conduct the traditional Viking funeral he’s always wanted; Sam and Jay are torn when they learn that the bones could be sold to a museum for a lot of much-needed cash. And, PETE’S WIFE: Pete (Richie Moriarty) gets a visit from his living wife only to discover she’s hiding a secret from him; Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) gets angry when Thorfinn binge-watches their favorite show without him; Trevor (Asher Grodman) learns he may have a daughter.

You can catch up on all the Episodes of GHOST on the CBS or Paramount+ app.
