Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hits the road with even more fury, and a lot of zany Wasteland characters. See it on the biggest, loudest screen possible.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) was a fantastic movie and a follow up prequel could have ruined the adventure. Fans of the franchise and Furiosa’s (Anya Taylor-Joy) character will have a lot to embrace in this one. It is an origin story that shows us how the Furiosa (Charlize Theron) in Fury Road became who she is.
One grand aspect of the later Mad Max films are the cars, bikes, and insanely creative machinery. This one does not disappoint. You may wonder how they can top Fury Road. This one is several years in the past so obviously they didn’t try and over sell it. It is fitting and timely. Even Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) looks a tad younger and healthier.
Several past characters are here – as they should be – as well as some new faces. The most noticeable is Dr. Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) who is the reason for the fury in Furiosa. His desire to take over the Wasteland is the driving force of this story. Chris takes the character in a direction that is different than we have seen in the Mad Max world. There is some humor there intentional or not. He is unhinged which is on brand, but at the same time feels a tad campy. He would feel more at home on a Disney Pirates movie. Not a bad performance, just unexpected.
Anya Taylor-Joy. Lot of pressure here for her to start the legacy that Theron made so amazing. We have seen her intensity in past roles and it comes across here in high octane power. Rewatching Fury Road will be complete and it will not feel like two separate roles.
Explosions, car chases, desert dust, and that same sped up camera style that Miller (creator, writer, director) is famous for is all here for you to enjoy. Rated R for sequences of strong violence, and grisly images, it actually tones down on some of the more disturbing moments we got in Fury. Still Joe is his family are the most inbred, twisted, and cringe worthy characters. Just younger and fewer sores.
Summer is a time for big screen blockbusters and Furiosa paves the way for the rest. Many of us thought Fury Road was best picture contender. This one has a strong argument as well.
