FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2 is a gamer – and horror fan – treat. This follow up to the 2023 film has all the bells and whistles, plus a lot more jump scares. If you thought the original animatronics were creepy wait until you get a load of this new one.

Synopsis: One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest. Former security guard Mike and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby concerning the fate of her animatronic friends. But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.. | 1h 44m | Rated PG-13 for violent content, terror and some language

This is a special franchise to those loyal to the game. It was obvious in the first film that Director Emma Tammi and Writer Scott Cawthon wanted to not only create an exciting film, but mainly pay homage to the video game franchise. They were successful then and are successful now. It is also important to point out that even if you never played the FNAF game, it is a fun watch. There is enough backstory and conversation so you will not be lost. It would be smart to watch the first film, but that is the case with any sequel.

Rarely is a second film better than the first. In the case of FNAF2 it might be true. The first film was great but it required a lot of character introduction and story building. In this one they were able to jump into the world of Freddy and never look back. More scares, more creatures, and more fun right from the start. To be honest that is what we are there for. We know who everyone is, now let’s get to some carnage! In a PG-13 sort of way of course.

Here we learn along with Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and Abby (Piper Rubio), that there is actually a second Freddys building where other mean and nasty things happened. This place holds an even more sinister being, The Puppet. This Puppet has a bone to pick – and break – with the adults in town. It has the ability to control the other prototypes to do its bidding. Once it learns of Abby’s connection to the kids in the first film, manipulation begins. It all leads up to another final showdown of man vs machine. Or bear. or whatever.

Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) is a pivotal part of the game and the first film. She held a lot of secrets to the lore of Freddy and the missing kids. Well it turns out that she is good at keeping a lot more secrets that could have saved everyone a lot of pain and suffering. Just tell the truth girl! Her relationship with Mike is rocky at best due to her past and inability to trust him with that past. The story touches a little on this relationship but not enough to add to the run time and/or take away from the action. Another smart decision.

Some entertaining costars round out this cast including Mike’s friend Jeremiah (Theodus Crane). Jeremiah is there for some comic relief and used just enough to make it special. Another addition is a Middle School science teacher named Mr.Berg (Wayne Knight). Most of the teens and tweens will not recognize him, but the older Jurassic Park and Seinfeld fans will get a tad giddy. No spoiler alerts here but there is no denying that Mr. Berg and Nedry have very similar screams.

There is great joy in saying that FNAF2 is a wonderful hit. It would be a shame if this beloved franchise was ruined by Hollywood. There is no doubt – zero doubt – that there is a 3rd film coming. If we keep it in the same faithful and trustworthy hands we will be in for another super fun experience.
