FAIR GAME (1986)

Fair Game

Fair Game (1986) opened theatrically July 8th and has a digital release today, July 12th. Look for a tangible copy you can hold in your hands sometime in August 2022. This film immediately took me back to my teen years and those nostalgic VHS rentals.

Synopsis: A bonafide Aussie classic, one that would later inspire Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, Fair Game is a wild revenge triller set in the outback pitting Jessica’s (Cassandra Delaney) wildlife sanctuary boss against three psycho kangaroo hunters. Bored with killing kangaroos, they decide to kill the animals in the sanctuary, and when they see how attractive the owner is, they decide to have a little “fun” with her, too. Turns out that they may get a bit more “fun” than they bargained for.

The film I Spit on Your Grave started this whole revenge genre, and several films were spawned from the concept. Though slightly formulaic they each had something unique that set them apart. In this one it is the barren outback, and one mean modified F100 Ford the called The Beast.

The rest is the same. You have one very pretty lady trying to mind her own business, and three barbaric jerks who feel they have the right to whoever and whatever they want. It is always a joy for the viewer to see them get what is coming to them at the hands of the fore mentioned damsel.

Delaney – once married to singer John Denver – is one reason this film stands out. I am sure in 1986 she looked like everyone else. TO watch her now is to watch the 80’s female come to glorious life.

Watching it this time around I could picture myself walking into the mom and pop video rental store in our small town, and seeking out this very film. We always looked for those covers which promised intensity, carnage, and if we where lucky, a bit of skin.

According to legend, this film was never released in US theaters which again made films like this so taboo to watch. Having the chance to own it now is a must for all those fans of revenge flicks.

Fair Game is rated R for language, nudity, violence, and adult themes. All the things we loved in our 1980’s teen years.
