EVIL DEAD RISE is now streaming on MAX and hits 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital on June 27th. The fifth film in the Dead franchise this one is the very similar to the 2013 release of Evil Dead. If this one caught your attention but you do not want to watch the first four, you are ok, as this is a standalone film and easy to follow.

We teach our kids many things when they are young. We try to instill in them strong values and ethics. Often though one main lesson is left out; if you find a book of the dead do not open it or read it out-loud! And certainly do not bleed on it.

How’s the story?

Synopsis: A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

This version has several selling points. It is set in a rundown apartment building and centers around a single mom and her three kids. The building is creepy and the film is shot using a lot of gray, darker tones to give it an even grittier and haunting look. If you like buckets of fake blood – around 1,720 gallons – and scary imagery you will walk away sated.

Imagery and styling aside, this one offers very little in the way of unique storytelling or plot. It is very predictable with little or no jump scares. There are several creepy moments but they fall into the gross spectrum rather than the terrifying realm.

What does it take to scare us these days? I guess everyone is different. Possession is always high on the list for me. The earlier Conjuring films and Paranormal Activity would do the trick. Not sure why this one didn’t hit the same.

EVIL DEAD RISE

is rated R for strong bloody horror violence and gore, and some language.
