DIFF 04.02.17

Here is my line up for today’s DIFF movie marathon.

Starting off at 2:15 with Menashe then changing gears and language to grab some of the Latino Showcase with The Present Ones. Continuing the Latino vibe with a laugh out loud comedy, Size Does Matter before ending the day with an off beat selection called Relationtrip.

MENASHE

Deep in the heart of New York’s ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, Menashe, a kind, hapless grocery store clerk, struggles to make ends meet and responsibly parent his young son, Rieven, following his wife Leah’s death.

THE PRESENT ONES

Past, present, love and insanity intermingle in Alejandro Molina’s psychological mind-bender, THE PRESENT ONES.

Ana struggles with both her memories and her emotions, leading to the unraveling of her life in Mexico City. What follows is a labyrinth of situations and emotions that challenge the audience as much as the characters enduring them.

Size Does Matter (El Tamaño Sí Importa)
Mexico, 2017, 95 min., Color, Spanish with English subtitles
Gender roles and expectations get reversed and transgressed in this unconventional love story written and directed by Rafa Lara. When the not-so-beautiful Vivi sets out to sweep her old socialite boss off his feet, romance and hilarity ensue as both of them have to learn new rules to an old game. The story transcends the rom-com boundaries, though, for it also entails the clash of working class and privilege as much as male vs. female roles.

The Relationtrip
USA, 2017, 90 min., Color
At an age when everyone around them is settling down and finding love, Beck and Liam are self proclaimed loners, emotionally hibernating through adulthood. After bonding over their mutual disinterest in relationships, they decide to go away together on a ‘friend’ trip. And that’s when things get weird. Really, really weird.
