Devotion

DEVOTION is a wonderful balance of historic story telling and emotional performances. Subtle and entertaining, with perfect pacing makes this one so easy to watch and enjoy. Though important, the seriousness of the content never feels overtly heavy.

The performance of Jonathan Majors has a lot to do with how viewers will react to the character and content. Majors is such a powerful, dramatic actor, but has the ability to deliver the tough dialogue with beauty and grace. It is why he is one of my favorite actors working today.

Based on the true story of U.S. Navy fighter pilot Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) and his wing man Tom Hudner (Glen Powell). Brown and Hudner flew combat missions together during the Korean War. Brown had the distinction of being one of the first black pilots. The obstacles he faced to reach that status were often harder than enemy combat.

Much of his early years we get in conversations between Brown and Hudner. Brown is a quiet, reflective, and instinctual pilot. As Hudner gains his trust Brown shares more of his life. The two become brothers as most men in the military do. Hudner is an academy graduate and likes to play everything by the book. Brown knows that the rules are not always the same for everyone. This allows for learning on both sides.

There are several scenes in the film that take place in the air. These are shot expertly, and even watching at home they were visually breathtaking. J.D. Dillard is a fairly new director in the grand scheme of things, but handles the theme, military world, and story wonderfully. This is not a war film but rather war is the back drop to introduce us to a hero many know little about.

The film reminded me a tad of Hidden Figures which also co-starred Glen Powell. Even though the film has heartbreaking moments and tears of both sadness and joy, you walk away feeling happy for Brown. this was a man who had every excuse to be bitter or resentful. But he rose above it all – literally – to love fully, and serve loyally.

Currently in theaters, DEVOTION is rated PG-13 for strong language, some war action/violence, and smoking.
