Death on the Nile is now on Digital, and releases on 4K Blu-ray and DVD April 5th from 20th Century Studios. Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh has done a fantastic job recreating this film and 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express.
Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is one of Agatha Christie’s most likable detectives. In this mystery Hercule finds himself in the middle of a lover’s quarrel after a beautiful heiress (Gal Gadot) runs off and marries her best friend’s (Emma Mackey) fiancé (Armie Hammer). As the wedding party and friends sail down the Nile the body count rises. Everyone is a suspect, and of course Hercule has all the answers.
The digital 4K version looks and sound fantastic and does come in Dolby Atmos. The experience of watching it at home was easily on par with seeing it in the theater.

What I liked about this adaptation is how Branagh – who also directed – gives us a very personal backstory to Poirot. We know he is a very discerning, brilliant man, with a love for fine food and attention to detail; but how this mustached man came to be where he is was another mystery. It might have been revealed in other books but I can not recall this before on the big screen. It was was a touching addition that gave the film a pleasant layer.
I watched the 1978 version of Death on the Nile again before seeing this one. Though a few minor settings are changed the film stays pretty true to the characters and plot lines. It feels polished without ever losing its organic roots. This is important for die hard fans and those who appreciated Murder on the Orient Express. It was easy to walk away from this one feeling good about the experience.
