Daisy Jones & the Six

Daisy Jones & the Six

Daisy Jones & the Six – currently airing on Prime Video – is one of the better mini-series of the year. Based on the best selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid this is one for fans of 70s arena bands, and films like Almost Famous. This fictional group unapologetically has similarities to Fleetwood Mac, though in no way a bio pic. More modeling a style, look, and personality.

I love the music of the 70s and anything that has to do with a “behind the music” theme. The film is shot in a documentary style with use hearing from band members as they talk about that final tour when everything fell apart. Time doesn’t heal all wounds, but it makes it easier to talk about.

The musical performances and original songs help solidify the episodes, and keep you in the moment of believability. Simply put, I would buy this bands album if it were released. Also the dynamic range of the characters on and off stage are powerful.

The two strong willed songwriters Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin) and Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) – think Stevie Nix and Lindsey Bucingham – are self destructive as much as brilliant creators. Like most bands these two traits never work well together and someone ends up losing. Often it is the band as a whole.

The style of the show is fantastic. The clothes, hair, and mindset of the 1970s is so prominent. It is another element that keeps you in the moment. If any of these fail then the entire facade implodes. We have to believe that this was a real band for the emotion to work. And it does.

DAISY JONES & THE SIX is a 10-episode mini-series and easily binged over a few days. Once you start you will be hooked, and it is so worth the journey.
