If you are not insulted in the first 15-minutes of the new BORAT film then you are probably watching a different movie. If ever there was an equal opportunity offender it is Sacha Baron Cohen and his alter ego, Borat. His ability to get personable about issues, causes, and people is unmatched. Yet, if we are honest with ourselves the light he shines on our culture as American’s reveals more truth than we want to admit. The moment we are wiling to laugh at ourselves it takes away from the shock value. Does he go too far this time? Oh my, yes. With hilarious results. (continued below)

(commentary continued) I do not want to spoil this film by breaking down the events that unfold. To witness them fresh is the best way. I will say that fans of the original Borat film will get a lot of the same here. Of course the target of much of the humor is the current presidential administration. Does the film take a lot out of context and use it to support its own twisted story line? Of course. But that is the fun of it. it is no different than an SNL skit except that those being made fun of are the actual persons. Ok, it might be a tad worse than a punny skit. I am curious how Cohen got away with the things in this film. Poetic license? That is a big pass if so. My hope is that people like Trump and Mike Pence would be able to laugh at themselves and take it for what it is.
This film also takes a stab at foreign culture as well. Borat is here this time with his daughter. There are many jokes about how in their homeland she would be no better than cattle or livestock. Watching their relationship change throughout the film is touching in a sick, creepy way. That subject is just another way of how Sasha shines a light on the importance of women’s rights. But if you spend the entire time being offended you miss it.
The bottom line is that if you are easily put-off by crude humor and the mockery of pretty much every taboo in the world; then this is not your film. There are fans of Borat though who will appreciate this one as much if not more than the first. In fact it is apparent during this movie how many people actually know and recognize the character. The first film was made in a time before tik tok and the prank video circuit. Minds were blown by this guy. Now I think that everyone is in on the act. They may not know they are in a Borat film, but they know something is up. That takes away some of the shock expressions that made the first film so much fun.
BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM is rated R – shocker – for pervasive strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and language. Be careful with whom you partake of this one with. There could be lots of awkward moments and squirming if you aren’t careful. If you find someone that can laugh at this as hard as you then I feel bad for you both and wish you well.
