M3GAN 2.0. She is taller, stronger, and a whole lot bitchier. Just when we thought we had seen the last of our favorite unstable bot, she is back in action with not only Cady, but the whole world at stake. Forget Superman and Ethan Hunt. My money is on this broad.
Synopsis: Two years after M3GAN’s rampage, her creator, Gemma, resorts to resurrecting her infamous creation in order to take down Amelia, the military-grade weapon who was built by a defense contractor who stole M3GAN’s underlying tech. | 1h 59m | Rated PG-13 for strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language, sexual material, and brief drug references
In spite of a few eye rolling moments, slapstick action, and implausible tech, M3GAN 2.0 is the most fun I have had at the theater yet this year. In this world of AI we live in a film like this becomes less sci-fi and more reality. M3gan uses all of the knowledge and familiar terms to create an adventure that might be right around the corner. We would be smart to start being nicer to siri, and google. They remember.
All of the characters who survived the first film are back in this one. Even though they nearly died at the hands of this AI Doll, a bigger threat has emerged. AMELIA is even more ruthless and seems to have been created using Gemma’s technology. When AMELIA starts coming after anyone with this tech knowledge, Gemma, Cady and Gemma’s team are all in the path. Bodies start falling as the danger gets closer. The only answer is to reboot someone you cant trust at all? Yes.
What is great about M3gan’s character is not just the AI function but the sarcastic wit, and her deadpan, sociopath delivery. Unlike Annabelle and Chucky, M3gan is able to bring more lifelike elements to her persona. She is deadlier and mouthier, yet underneath all that you almost root for her. Ok, actually more than almost. You can’t help but like this bot!
There are many moving parts to this sequel and at times the amount of characters and players gets hard to follow. Having this many strands also makes it feel longer than it is. The story is engaging and the battles are great, but there is just a tad bit of at the end that drags. Only because they have to wrap up all the loose ends. But that is a very minor complaint compared to all the fun and action.
Humor is large in this one too. Now that we get M3gan and know here agenda they can have more fun with her this time around. She is creepy at times and uses that in humorous ways. The film also gives a few wonderful nods to the tech films and gadgets of old. They are subtle but there. We have come a long way from the 1980s robot and this film plays off that well.
M3gan was created for Cady and that relationship is still at the heart of this story. Cady and Gemma too are still working out their bond. Gemma is very tech brained and is not the best at talking to Cady. There are touches of parenting woes that anyone with a child will relate to. We feel like failures a lot, and sometimes need someone to remind us what we are doing right.
The action and fight scenes are changed up in 2.0 ands takes it from the more horror slasher film of the original to a more tech and choreographed fight flick. When two indestructible bots go at it, you have to get clever with the gadgets. If you are wanting a higher body count stay with it as more comes near the end.
Summer movies are made to enjoy and not think too much about. M3GAN 2.0 is that and more. It was a true blast to watch and one of the first films this year I can not wait to rewatch.
